Herstat has been the subject of several well-controlled clinical trials for the treatment of cold sores, the most recent of which was published in the Journal of Clinical Practice in 2001 (1).
These clinical studies all show a reduction in healing time for the patients treated with Herstat versus the controls (treated with placebo or compared to a previous untreated cold sore episode). The studies also confirm a reduction in associated pain and discomfort and, when asked, patients confirmed their strong preference for Herstat over the alternative treatment. A study of Herstat in the treatment of genital herpes, showing a similar reduction in duration and severity of symptoms, was published in the journal Phytomedicine in 2000 (2).
Herstat is currently being marketed in Europe (as a traditional or complimentary medicine), and in North America.
The product has an extensive registration dossier in the CTD (Common Technical Document) format required for registration applications within the EU.
Herstat is available as 3% Propolis ACF Ointment (2g, 4g) and also in a convenient, easy-to-use, LipCare stick (4g). Several new Propolis ACF® products are being developed.
